The mousetrap was set
and he assured me it would dispatch the mouse
instantaneously- no pain, no gore. And he would
empty the trap.
Then, no more droppings in the kitchen or gnawing
at the substructure... problems solved in a snap.
In the peace and quiet of night, the scurrying began
at the cupboard... down the wall... behind the chair...
in front of the door... behind the sofa... closer... closer...
CRACK... the snap of the trap... but not the end...
the flopping and screaming, thrashing and knocking...
hours of minutes later... it was over.
All but the memories.
